Al-Attiyah: Formula 1 World Championship Soon In Qatar

FIA vice president Nasser Al-Attiyah confirmed that the continued support of his highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the prince of Qatar, has helped in promoting the sports sector, especially its safety aspect.

In an interview with Qatari news agency QUNA, Al-Attiyah stated that his highness is considered the first state president to submit this a safety project to the FIA and the UN, in order to gain their support and reduce the number of traffic-related deaths. 

Al-Attiyah also mentioned the methodology drawn by his highness to promote the sport in general and to support the youth and the promising talents in particular, as he backed the “committee of the initiatives and talents” formed by tehe ministry of youth and sport, which is headed by minister Salah bin Ghanim Al Ali. Al-Attiyah stated that the FIA and FIM benefited from this committee as it sponsored a number of talented sport drivers such as Sheikh Hamad bin Eid Al Thani, Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah, Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari and Mohamad Al-Manaai.

Al-Attiyah said that he got the approval from the leadership in Qatar to construct a Formula 1 circuit in Losail city. He also said that there is a strong desire from both the QMMF and Formula One Management to host a Formula 1 round in Doha. Additionally, he mentioned that the international Formula 1 circuit should be ready to host a Formula 1 championship round by 2016 or 2017.
