General Motors has built their 500 millionth vehicle.
While the achievement took over a century, the production figure is the "the most of any automaker by far."
The company declined to identify the 500 millionth vehicle but GM CEO Mary Barra and GM North America President Alan Batey celebrated the occasion by awarding Iraqi war veteran and Purple Heart recipient Trent Brining with the keys to a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. He is just one of five customers who will be notified that they are receiving a new, regionally built GM vehicle.
Besides celebrating the production milestone, GM used the event to highlighted their various innovations including the first V8 engine, the first automatic transmission and the first air bags in a production vehicle.
