The status quo might be in for a rude awakening at GMC in the next few years. Buick- GMC Vice President Duncan Aldred says, “I have come to do a job and change the face of the brand.”
Aldred is a newer face at GMC, having come from his chairman and managing director role at Vauxhall Motors and CEO position of Opel Ireland in February. In an interview with Edmunds, he said the goal is to strengthen the brand in an effort to increase sales. “We are looking at everything," Aldred said. "What segments will grow? What segments will not? We are evaluating all possibilities that could really turbocharge the brand and the growth."
More specifically, Aldred says the automaker is currently exploring the possibilities of adding a flagship halo vehicle above the Yukon Denali, something that would be even more on par with the Cadillac Escalade. GMC is also considering its own subcompact crossover roughly the size of the Buick Encore.
What’s most interesting is Aldred’s admitting there’s room for an “active all-road, Wrangler-esque type of vehicle” in the lineup.
While there is no way of knowing what GMC’s early brainstorming ideas are, it’s hard to ignore the possibility of a new GMC Jimmy, the two-door SUV modeled after the Chevrolet Blazer. Those early Jimmy and Blazers were built off full-size truck platforms and featured removable hard tops over the second row seats and cargo area. Big V-8s and four-wheel-drive help made the boxy SUVs an icon of the 1970s and 80s.
